1959 Topps #480 Red Schoendienst

About Red Schoendienst
Albert "Red" Schoendienst broke in with the Cardinals in 1945, filling in for Stan Musial, then settled in at second base and became one of the era's finest fielders, leading the NL in fielding percentage multiple times. A switch-hitter, he made 10 All-Star teams over 19 seasons with St. Louis, the New York Giants, and Milwaukee Braves, finishing with a .289 average and 2,449 hits. He won World Series titles as a player in 1946 (Cardinals) and 1957 (Braves), the only championship Milwaukee ever captured. His 1959 Topps card shows him with the Braves late in his playing career. Schoendienst later managed St. Louis for 12 seasons (1965-76), winning pennants in 1967-68 and the World Series in 1967 - the second-longest managerial tenure in franchise history. The Veterans Committee elected him to the Hall of Fame in 1989, and the Cardinals retired his No. 2 in 1996.
