About Clay Dalrymple
Clay Dalrymple broke into pro ball with the Sacramento Solons in 1956, then was drafted from the Milwaukee Braves by the Philadelphia Phillies in the November 1959 Rule 5 draft. His 1960 Topps card, #523 in the short-printed high-number series (#507-572), pictures him as a rookie backing up Jimmie Coker; he took over the Phillies' starting job in 1961 and held it through 1968. A quick-release, left-handed-hitting catcher, Dalrymple threw out 48.8% of basestealers for his career, 30th all-time, and set a National League record with 99 consecutive errorless games (628 chances) in 1966-67, leading NL catchers in assists three times. He anchored the Phillies' near-pennant 1964 club, broke up Juan Marichal's no-hitter in Marichal's major-league debut, and later spoiled a Gaylord Perry no-hit bid. Traded to Baltimore in 1969, he won two AL pennants and is the only man ever to single off Nolan Ryan in a World Series game. He retired after 1971 with a .233 average, 55 home runs, and 327 RBIs over 12 seasons.
