1969 Topps #357 Carl Taylor

About Carl Taylor
Taylor broke out in 1969, hitting .348 in 104 games as a versatile Pittsburgh Pirates utility man who split his time between the outfield and first base, a career-best mark that stands as the headline of his playing days; he added four home runs and 33 RBI. That winter the Pirates traded him to the St. Louis Cardinals. His Topps #357 card from the set's fourth print series pictures him with the Pirates and reflects that breakout campaign.
Carl Means Taylor, born January 20, 1944 in Sarasota, Florida, was a right-handed hitting and throwing utility man who played catcher, outfielder, and first base across six big league seasons from 1968 to 1973. Standing 6 feet 2 inches and 200 pounds, he broke in with the Pittsburgh Pirates, moved to the St. Louis Cardinals in a trade, then split time between the Kansas City Royals and a brief return to Pittsburgh before finishing his career with the Royals. His best season came in 1969, when he hit .348 as a utility player for the Pirates, well above his career mark. Over 411 games he batted .266 with 225 hits, including 31 doubles and ten triples, driving in 115 runs. He was the stepbrother of longtime Baltimore Orioles first baseman Boog Powell, and he was on Pittsburgh's roster when the Pirates reacquired him in September 1971 for their pennant drive, though he was not eligible for that year's World Series.
