About Earle Combs
Card #183 pictures Hall of Famer Earle Combs in his lone season (1954) as a coach for the Philadelphia Phillies, but his fame was earned as the New York Yankees' leadoff man. Signed off the Louisville Colonels after starring at Eastern Kentucky State Normal School, the center fielder spent his entire 12-year playing career (1924-1935) in pinstripes. Batting ahead of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Combs was the catalyst atop the 1927 "Murderers' Row" club, setting a Yankees single-season record with 231 hits (unbroken until Don Mattingly's 238 in 1986) and leading the American League in triples three times. He hit .325 with 1,866 hits, 58 home runs, 632 RBI and 96 stolen bases over 1,455 games, winning three World Series titles (1927, 1928, 1932). Nicknamed "The Kentucky Colonel" for his home-state roots and gentlemanly bearing, Combs saw his career effectively ended by a fractured skull suffered crashing into the outfield wall at St. Louis' Sportsman's Park in 1934. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1970.
