About Mayo Smith
Card #130 pictures Mayo Smith as manager of the Philadelphia Phillies, the club he led from 1955 to 1958 in the first of his major-league managerial jobs. Signed at 18 by Dan Howley to Toronto of the International League in 1933, Smith spent most of a long minor-league career in the outfield, winning the 1944 International League batting title at .340. His entire big-league playing career was a single wartime season: he played center field for the 1945 Philadelphia Athletics, batting .212 with 43 hits and 11 RBI in 73 games. Nicknamed "Catfish" since high school, after Georgia All-America end Vernon "Catfish" Smith, he turned to managing and later guided the Cincinnati Reds (1959) before finding lasting fame with the Detroit Tigers (1967-1970). His 1968 Tigers won the AL pennant at 103-59 and beat the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series, earning Smith The Sporting News Manager of the Year Award; his gamble of shifting center fielder Mickey Stanley to shortstop for the Series remains one of baseball's boldest managerial moves. Smith finished 662-612 as a manager and died in 1977. This is his first Topps card.
