Ossie Bluege - 1933 Goudey #159
1933 Goudey #159 Ossie Bluege

About Ossie Bluege
Oswald "Ossie" Bluege (1900–1985) broke into pro ball in 1920 with Peoria of the Three-I League and reached the majors with the Washington Senators in 1922, becoming their regular third baseman by 1923 and playing his entire 18-year career (1922–1939) in a Washington uniform. A slick-fielding right-handed third baseman, he batted .272 with 1,751 hits, 43 home runs, 848 RBI, and 140 stolen bases over 1,867 games, and led American League third basemen in fielding percentage in 1931. Teammates and sportswriters called him "The Cat" for his quickness and shallow positioning at third, and AL President Joe Cronin ranked him simply: "You start with Bluege." Bluege played in all three World Series the Senators ever reached — winning it in 1924, losing in 1925 (he returned from a beaning by Vic Aldridge to double in Game Five), and losing again in 1933, the pennant-winning season pictured on this card. After his playing days he managed Washington from 1943 to 1947, earning Major League Manager of the Year honors in 1945, then spent decades more with the organization as farm director and club comptroller. His scouting of a teenage Harmon Killebrew proved pivotal, and Killebrew credited Bluege in his 1984 Hall of Fame induction speech.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 1933 Goudey Ossie Bluege card?
It is card #159 of the 1933 Goudey (R319) Baseball set - the 240-card, 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inch color-art set issued in 1933 with Big League Chewing Gum. It pictures Ossie Bluege with the Washington Senators.
Is the 1933 Goudey Ossie Bluege #159 a rookie card?
By modern catalog convention, yes. 1933 Goudey is treated as the hobby's first major nationally distributed gum set, so nearly every card in it carries the rookie-card (RC) designation - a modern label applied retroactively, since many of these players had earlier tobacco, caramel, or strip cards.
How many cards are in the 1933 Goudey set?
240 numbered cards, though collectors usually count 241 collectible cards because #6 Jimmy Dykes exists in an error and a corrected version. Only 239 numbers were in 1933 packs - #106 (Nap Lajoie) was printed in 1934 and issued by mail.
