About Bobby Burke
Robert James Burke was born January 23, 1907, in Joliet, Illinois, and signed with the Chicago White Sox organization after high school, pitching for their Class-A Little Rock affiliate before Washington selected the left-hander in the October 1927 Rule 5 draft on scout Joe Engel's recommendation. A control-minded southpaw, Burke pitched for the Senators from 1927-1935 and closed his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1937, compiling a 38-46 record with a 4.28-4.29 ERA and roughly 299 strikeouts over 254 games (88 starts) and 918⅔ innings. His signature moment came on August 8, 1931, when he no-hit the Boston Red Sox 5-0 at Griffith Stadium, walking five (three to Urbane Pickering) and striking out a career-high eight, the only no-hitter thrown by a Senators pitcher in that ballpark's 50-year history and the first there since Walter Johnson in 1920; he'd been nursing a burn suffered in a boating accident the day before. In 1933, the season this Goudey card was issued, Burke went 4-3 with a 3.23 ERA in relief and spot-start duty as Washington won 99 games and the American League pennant under player-manager Joe Cronin, though he did not appear in the World Series loss to the New York Giants. After his playing days he umpired briefly, served during World War II, coached youth baseball back in Joliet, and later ran a fishing resort in Florida. He died February 8, 1971.
