About the 1988-89 Fleer Basketball set

1988-89 Fleer Basketball is Fleer's third modern-era NBA set, issued for the 1988-89 season and covering the rosters and rookie class of the 1987-88 campaign. The 132-card base set runs 119 player cards ordered alphabetically by team (Atlanta through Washington, with a few late-trade exceptions such as Moses Malone shown as a Hawk), Fleer's first All-Star subset at #120-131, and a checklist at #132. Wax boxes held 36 packs; every pack carried 12 cards, a stick of gum and one of the 11 Super Star Stickers, which collectors track alongside the base set for a 143-card master run.

The rookie class is the set's engine: 31 cards carry rookie-card designations on this checklist (the Trading Card Database census), led by Scottie Pippen (#20), Dennis Rodman (#43), Reggie Miller (#57), Mark Jackson (#82) in his Rookie of the Year season, Muggsy Bogues (#13) and John Stockton (#115) – Stockton's first major-brand card in his fourth NBA season. Michael Jordan, fresh off his first MVP award, appears three times: base #17, All-Star #120 and Sticker #7. Thirty subjects picture Naismith Hall of Famers.

Three uncorrected errors are noted: Scottie Pippen's back misspells his name "Pippin" (#20), John Williams's #26 back lists the wrong birth year, and Kenny Smith's #100 back sends him to the wrong college. None was ever corrected, so the checklist stays 132 cards with no variations.

Condition and authenticity both matter here. PSA notes the issue is prone to major centering and print-dot problems, similar to those of the 86/87 Fleer set. And in February 2022, CGC published a Counterfeit Card Alert on a fake #120 Jordan All-Star – tell-tale pixelation and non-conforming edge cuts, but "deceptive enough that it might be difficult to detect if being purchased online." For the Jordan cards especially, buy graded or from sellers who guarantee authenticity.
