Dallas made Mark Aguirre the No. 1 overall pick of the 1981 NBA Draft after a storied DePaul run — 1980 Naismith College Player of the Year and a Final Four trip as a freshman under Ray Meyer. Known as "Ziggy" since his Chicago West Side days — his high school coach stretched it to "Ziggy the Elephant," needling his hefty build — the 6-6 small forward became the young Mavericks' first superstar: 24.6 points per game over eight Dallas seasons, three All-Star nods (1984, 1987, 1988), and a 29.5-point eruption in 1983-84 that trailed only Adrian Dantley for the scoring crown. Fittingly, midway through the very season this card sat in packs, Dallas swapped Aguirre to Detroit for Dantley himself — and he answered with back-to-back titles on the 1989 and 1990 Pistons. He retired in 1994 with 18,458 points across 13 seasons, and the Mavericks later retired his No. 24. Not a rookie card, but a snapshot of the last days of his Dallas prime.
