About the 1954-55 Topps Hockey set

1954-55 Topps Hockey was Topps' very first hockey issue: 60 cards covering the four NHL clubs that played their home games in the United States – the Boston Bruins, Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings and New York Rangers, 15 cards each, interleaved through the numbering rather than blocked by team. Topps was limited to the four US-based clubs; Parkhurst, the established Canadian maker, continued to cover all six NHL teams in its own 1954-55 set, and several of this set's biggest names appear in both.

The cards are the only Topps hockey issue printed at the company's larger pre-1957 size of 2-5/8 by 3-3/4 inches. Fronts put a color player photo on a solid white background with the team logo in an upper corner, a facsimile autograph across the image, and red and blue nameplate strips below. The red-and-blue backs – printed in English only, where Parkhurst practice was bilingual – carry the card number in a puck-shaped circle, vital statistics along a blue hockey stick, a biography, a rules-explainer cartoon and a line of 1953-54 statistics. Topps did not issue another hockey set until 1957-58.

Gordie Howe's #8 is the key card of the set, joined by Terry Sawchuk (#58), Ted Lindsay (#51) and Red Kelly (#5) from Detroit's champion Red Wings – sixteen cards in all picture Hockey Hall of Famers, and the set is bookended by Dick Gamble at #1 and Milt Schmidt at #60. Because Parkhurst had been making hockey cards since 1951, most of these players already had a card by the time Topps arrived. Only nine are true rookies, led by Camille Henry – fresh off his Calder Trophy season – and Don McKenney. Five of the nine, including McKenney, Ivan Irwin and Marcel Bonin, have no Parkhurst counterpart in the 1951-52 through 1954-55 sets either.

Two uncorrected errors are noted on the checklist: Leo Labine's name is spelled "LaBine" on both sides of #19, and Jack McIntyre's #43 front calls him "Jake". The set was sold in one-cent single-card packs and five-cent six-card packs. Unlicensed reprint "factory sets" of this issue circulate online – a complete vintage set is a significant holding, so buy graded or from sellers who guarantee authenticity.
