About Warren Godfrey
Toronto-born Warren Godfrey needed just one pro season — with Muzz Patrick's Tacoma Rockets of the PCHL in 1951-52 — to earn a regular shift on Boston's blue line in 1952-53. The hard-hitting defenseman hit so hard they called him 'The Rock,' or 'Rocky' for short, and the nickname followed him onto nearly every card he appeared on. Card #50 catches him in his third Bruins season, so it's no rookie card — but it marks a career year: a personal-best 17 assists and an NHL All-Star Game selection in 1954-55. That June, Boston shipped him to Detroit in the blockbuster Terry Sawchuk trade. Rocky logged 16 NHL seasons and nearly 800 games for the Bruins and Red Wings (32 goals, 125 assists), reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 1953 and 1961 without a ring, and finally won his championship with the 1967 Calder Cup Pittsburgh Hornets.
