About Fleming Mackell
The son of original Ottawa Senator Jack Mackell, Fleming Mackell starred for Toronto's St. Michael's Majors before breaking in with the Maple Leafs in 1947-48, picking up Stanley Cup rings in 1949 and 1951. Dealt to Boston for defenseman Jim Morrison during 1951-52, the 5-foot-7 center exploded for 27 goals in 1952-53 and earned NHL First All-Star Team honors, adding the Dufresne Trophy as the Bruins' best on Garden ice. A rugged, hard-charging playmaker with a razor-sharp skating style, he peaked with 60 points in 1957-58, then shared the playoff scoring lead with linemate Don McKenney — 19 points in 12 games. His position is the set's one real puzzle: this is the only card in the 60 that prints two — “Left Wing-Center” — while Hockey Reference has him at right wing for 1954-55, the very season it was issued. He retired after 1959-60 with 149 goals and 369 points across 13 NHL seasons, and in 2023 Boston named him one of the Historic 100 Bruins. Not a rookie card — Mackell had cardboard dating back to his late-1940s Leafs days.
