1954-55 Topps #6 Real Chevrefils

About Real Chevrefils
Chevrefils arrived in Boston as one of the most hyped juniors of his day — a 52-goal, 103-point season with the 1951 Memorial Cup champion Barrie Flyers had him ranked the second-best junior in Canada behind only Jean Béliveau. The swift left winger joined the Bruins in 1951-52, and the season on this card was one of his best: 40 points and a berth in the NHL All-Star Game. Dealt to Detroit in the blockbuster that brought Terry Sawchuk to Boston, he was back with the Bruins by January 1956 and peaked in 1956-57 with 31 goals, another All-Star Game, and a Second-Team All-Star nod. Known simply as "Chevy" — the shorthand teammates made of his surname — he battled alcoholism throughout his career and was out of the NHL by 27, finishing with 104 goals in 387 games. He died in 1981 at 48; his gravestone reads "Chevy, number 12" beside a Bruins emblem. Not a rookie card — he'd been a Bruin since 1951.
