About Lorne Ferguson
A Palmerston, Ontario product who starred for the OHA's Guelph Biltmores, Lorne Ferguson broke in with Boston for three games in 1949-50, then spent the early fifties earning his way back through the minors. A monster 1953-54 with the AHL's Hershey Bears — 45 goals and 87 points — did the trick, and the 1954-55 campaign pictured here turned out to be his NHL best: career highs of 20 goals and 34 points on the Bruins' left wing. Known simply as "Fergie," the natural short form of his surname, he logged 422 NHL games for Boston, Detroit, and Chicago between 1949 and 1959, totaling 82 goals and 162 points with five trips to the playoffs. Traded to the Red Wings midway through 1955-56, he closed out his big-league days with the Black Hawks in 1958-59, then kept skating in the minors and Ontario senior ranks around Kingston clear into 1970. Not a rookie card — his debut came five years earlier — but it captures his finest season.
