About Bill Quackenbush

By the time Topps pictured him with Boston on card #49 of the 1954-55 set, Bill Quackenbush was a decade-plus NHL veteran — no rookie card here, just one of hockey's classiest blueliners in his final years. Born Hubert George Quackenbush in Toronto, he was rechristened "Bill" by an aunt who disliked his given name, and the handle stuck from junior stops with the Toronto Native Sons and Brantford Lions to a free-agent signing with Detroit in 1942. A smooth offensive defenceman, he split fourteen seasons between the Red Wings and Bruins (1942-56), making history in 1948-49 as the first defenceman to win the Lady Byng Trophy after a season with zero penalties — the heart of a 131-game penalty-free streak. Detroit GM Jack Adams so detested the gentlemanly award that he promptly traded him to Boston. Five NHL All-Star Team selections, eight All-Star Game appearances, and just 95 penalty minutes across 775 games carried him into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1976.
