About Bob Armstrong
Every shift of Bob Armstrong's NHL career came in a Boston sweater. A Toronto native who developed with the OHA's Stratford Kroehlers, the right-shooting defenseman debuted with the Bruins in 1950-51, seasoned a year with AHL Hershey, then held down the Boston blue line from 1952-53 into 1961-62. Armstrong played it rugged and simple — 671 penalty minutes against just 13 goals across 541 regular-season games — and helped the Bruins reach the Stanley Cup Final three times, in 1953, 1957, and 1958, each trip ending at the hands of Montreal. He added a berth in the 1960 NHL All-Star Game. Topps caught him here as an established third-year regular, so card #7 is not an Armstrong rookie. After winding down with Hull-Ottawa and Rochester, he began a second act as a master at Ontario's Lakefield College School, and he died in 1990 at age 59.
