1954-55 Topps #38 Hal Laycoe

About Hal Laycoe
One of the rare NHL players to skate in eyeglasses, Hal Laycoe worked his way from Saskatoon junior hockey through Royal Canadian Navy service teams during World War II before signing with the New York Rangers in 1945. The steady left-shooting defenseman moved to Montreal in 1947, then landed with Boston via a 1951 midseason trade, patrolling the Bruins' blue line through 1955-56. His card #38 in 1954-55 Topps — not a rookie card — catches him in the very season his high stick on Maurice Richard and the ensuing fight sparked the infamous Richard Riot of March 1955. Laycoe's second act was arguably bigger: he coached the WHL's Portland Buckaroos to Lester Patrick Cup titles in 1960-61 and 1964-65, ran the Los Angeles Kings' bench briefly, and became the expansion Vancouver Canucks' first head coach in 1970. The WHL even named its top-defenseman trophy the Hal Laycoe Cup.
