About Milt Schmidt
Few cards catch a legend at the finish line like this one: 1954-55 was Milt Schmidt's final NHL season, and he hung up his skates midway through it to become Boston's head coach — no rookie card, but a true farewell issue. The Kitchener, Ontario product debuted with the Bruins in 1936-37 and centered the famed Kraut Line with boyhood pals Woody Dumart and Bobby Bauer, a nickname coined by Canadiens player Albert Leduc for the German heritage of the Kitchener-raised trio. In 1939-40 the line finished 1-2-3 in NHL scoring, Schmidt on top with 52 points, and Boston won Stanley Cups in 1939 and 1941. After three prime seasons lost to RCAF service in World War II, he returned, was named captain in 1951, and won the 1950-51 Hart Trophy. A three-time First-Team All-Star with 575 points in 776 games, all in black and gold, Schmidt later coached the Bruins and built their 1970 and 1972 Cup winners as GM. Hockey Hall of Fame, Class of 1961.
