1934 Goudey Baseball
1934 Goudey Baseball — Interactive Checklist
About the 1934 Goudey Baseball set (R320)
1934 Goudey Baseball was the Goudey Gum Company's 96-card encore to its landmark 240-card 1933 issue, sold one card per one-cent pack of Big League Chewing Gum. Catalogued as R320 in the American Card Catalog, the cards keep the 1933 size of 2-3/8 by 2-7/8 inches, with painted color-art fronts over line-drawn ballpark scenes. The set's signature is the endorsement strip along the bottom of every front: a blue "Lou Gehrig says..." banner on 84 cards, and a red "Chuck Klein says..." banner on the 12 National League cards #80-91 – Goudey's nod to league balance after signing the Yankees' first baseman as its spokesman. The backs carry each player's biography written as a first-person quote from Gehrig or Klein.
The set was printed on four 24-card press sheets in numerical order. Sheet 1 (#1-24) reused returning stars and artwork from the 1933 set so cards could reach shelves by Opening Day; sheets 2-4 introduced almost entirely new subjects, which is why 63 of the 96 cards are catalog rookie cards. The high numbers (#73-96) came late in the season and are the set's toughest cards, with #49-72 a step behind. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie mail-in card was actually printed alongside this set's final sheet – see our 1933 Goudey checklist for that story.
Lou Gehrig, in his Triple Crown summer, is the only player with two cards (#37 and #61); Babe Ruth, in his final Yankee season, is famously absent. Twenty cards picture National Baseball Hall of Famers, headlined by the two Gehrigs, the Hank Greenberg rookie card (#62), Jimmie Foxx on the #1 card, Dizzy Dean in his 30-win season, and Lefty Grove in his first Red Sox year. Kiki Cuyler (#90) is the lone Hall of Famer among the Chuck Klein high numbers. Four cards picture 1934 player-managers: Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Grimm, Frankie Frisch and Bill Terry.
Rookie-card designations on this checklist follow the modern catalog convention for the set; two fronts carry uncorrected first-name spellings ("Jimmy" Foxx on #1 and "Charley" Gehringer on #23). A parallel Canadian issue, 1934 World Wide Gum (V354), used the same designs.
