1934 Goudey #3 Charlie Grimm
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.

About Charlie Grimm
Charlie Grimm broke in with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1916, had a brief stop with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1918, then settled with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1919-1924 before joining the Chicago Cubs in 1925 for a career that ran through 1936. A sure-handed first baseman, he led National League first basemen in fielding percentage seven times between 1920 and 1933, batted .290 with 2,299 hits, and hit .389 in the 1929 World Series. When the Cubs fired Rogers Hornsby during the 1932 season, they turned to Grimm as player-manager; he drove a 37-18 finish to the pennant and batted .333 that fall in the Series. This 1934 card reuses his 1933 Goudey pose amid the set's returning sheet-one artwork, catching "Jolly Cholly" - nicknamed for the banjo-picking, sing-along good humor he brought to the clubhouse - one season before he'd lead Chicago to a 100-win year and the 1935 pennant behind a 21-game winning streak. He went on to manage 19 seasons across four terms with the Cubs and Braves, retiring with a 1,287-1,067 record and twelve Hall of Fame ballot appearances without election.
