1934 Goudey #4 Woody English
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.

About Woody English
Elwood “Woody” English began his pro career with the semipro Zanesville Greys in 1924, signed with the Toledo Mud Hens in 1925, and was sold to the Chicago Cubs for $50,000 late in 1926. He won the Cubs’ shortstop job in 1927 and spent a decade in Chicago, later moving to third base as the club fielded some of the highest-scoring lineups in baseball. Batting leadoff or second, English scored 400 runs from 1929 through 1931, and his monster 1930 season — a .335 average, 214 hits, 152 runs — included 755 plate appearances, a major-league record until 1938. He played in the first All-Star Game in 1933, and he was manning third base in the 1932 World Series when Babe Ruth made his “called shot”; English always insisted Ruth was answering the Cubs’ bench, not pointing to the bleachers. By 1934, the season shown on this card, Stan Hack had taken over third, limiting English to 109 games and a .278 average, though he stayed a Cub through 1936 before closing his twelve-year career with Brooklyn in 1937–38. This Goudey issue reused his 1933 portrait, making it his second straight year in the set.
