1934 Goudey #5 Ed Brandt
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.
About Ed Brandt
Edward Arthur Brandt, called "Big Ed" for his tall frame, started his pro career with the Pacific Coast League's Seattle Indians in 1922 at seventeen. A 1925 semipro game against a disguised Chick Gandil, one of the banned Black Sox, briefly landed him on baseball's ineligible list until Seattle won his reinstatement. He reached the Boston Braves in 1928 and became their workhorse left-hander, leading the staff in innings every season from 1931 through 1934 while topping fifteen wins each year; 1931 was his best, an 18-11 mark with a 2.92 ERA that placed him on Babe Ruth's All-American team. Card #5 returns Brandt from the 1933 Goudey issue, part of the new set's opening sheet of reused subjects, and catches him fresh off a 1934 season of 16 wins, twenty complete games, and shutouts over the Cubs, Pirates, and Giants. He later pitched for Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, closing out his major-league days in 1938 with a 121-146 record, and died in a 1944 traffic accident in Spokane.
