About Joe Mowry
Joseph Aloysius Mowry began his pro career as a switch-hitting outfielder out of the University of Iowa, spending ten minor-league seasons between 1931 and 1941 — including a 1932 stop with the Minneapolis Millers — and hitting .328 with 70 home runs across 908 games. The St. Louis native joined the Boston Braves on May 13, 1933, and spent three seasons patrolling Boston's outfield, batting .233 with 19 doubles, 2 home runs and 37 RBI in 192 games. His enduring moment in baseball history came on May 25, 1935, at Forbes Field, when he entered as a seventh-inning defensive replacement for teammate Babe Ruth — right after the 40-year-old Bambino crushed home runs No. 712, 713 and 714, the last of his fabled career total. Mowry singled in the ninth before the Pirates closed out an 11-7 win. Card #59 in the 1934 Goudey set is Mowry's rookie card, picturing the young Braves outfielder a year before his brush with baseball history alongside Ruth.
