1934 Goudey #20 Shanty Hogan
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.
About Shanty Hogan
James Francis "Shanty" Hogan arrived in the majors with the Boston Braves on June 23, 1925, first as an outfielder before Boston shifted the 6-foot-1, 240-pound backstop behind the plate. Traded to the New York Giants before the 1928 season, he thrived under John McGraw, batting over .300 in four straight years and finishing eighth in NL MVP voting in 1928. His best season came in 1930, when he hit .339 with 13 home runs and 75 RBIs. Defensively he was just as sharp: on August 19, 1931, he became the first catcher to start three double plays in a game, and in 1933 he set a still-unbroken major-league record by throwing out 75 percent of runners attempting to steal. He and infielder Andy Cohen also ran a vaudeville act together. The Giants sold Hogan back to Boston in December 1932, and that Braves stint is the one pictured on this reused 1934 Goudey #20, before he closed out his career with Washington in 1937 with a lifetime .295 average.
