About Huck Betts
Walter McKinley Betts, a right-handed pitcher from Millsboro, Delaware, arrived in the majors with the Philadelphia Phillies on April 26, 1920, but was out of professional baseball entirely from 1927 through 1931 after six unspectacular seasons and a year in the low minors. He resurfaced with the Boston Braves in 1932 at age 35 and, mixing a fastball, curve, and screwball, authored the best stretch of his career — the National League's third-best ERA (2.80) that year, then a career-high 17 wins in 1934, the very season captured on this Goudey card. Betts closed out his career with Boston in 1935, finishing his ten-year, 307-game major league run at 61-68 with a 3.93 ERA. Though his debut dated to 1920, this 1934 Goudey #36 ranks as his recognized rookie card, produced during his improbable Boston comeback. Delaware inducted him into its state Sports Hall of Fame in 1980, and he died in his hometown of Millsboro in 1987 at age 90.
