About Baxter Jordan
Baxter Byerly “Buck” Jordan came up through the Salisbury Colonials, good enough that the town held a “Baxter Jordan Day” in June 1925, catching John McGraw’s eye. He was called up to the Giants in 1927, passed through Washington in 1931, then settled at first base for the Boston Braves in 1932. A slick glove more than a slugger, Jordan was a line-drive contact hitter; in a torrid June 1934 stretch — the season pictured on his Goudey card — he strung together three-hit games before a five-hit outburst at St. Louis, the only Boston National League player since 1876 to total 14 hits across four games. His career year came in 1936 with the Boston Bees, when he hit a career-high .323 and soon appeared on a Wheaties box. Teammate Rowdy Elliott tagged him “Buck Shot” for the pop on his throwing arm, shortened to “Buck.” Jordan closed a ten-year career in 1938 with a .299 average across five clubs. This 1934 Goudey #31 remains his recognized rookie card.
