1934 Goudey #32 Blondy Ryan

About Blondy Ryan
John Collins 'Blondy' Ryan turned pro after starring at the College of Holy Cross, where his shortstop play helped the Crusaders win Eastern Intercollegiate titles in 1929 and 1930. He debuted with the Chicago White Sox in 1930, but made his name after taking over shortstop for the New York Giants in 1933, delivering the biggest hit of his career that October: an 11th-inning single that scored the winning run in Game 4 of the World Series as the Giants beat the Washington Senators in five games. Weeks earlier, sidelined with a spike wound during a pennant-race slump, Ryan had wired manager Bill Terry the telegram that became Giants lore: 'They cannot beat us. En route. J.C. Ryan.' Card #32 in the 1934 Goudey set—his rookie issue—depicts him back at short for the Giants the next season, when he collected 125 hits in 110 games. He closed out a six-year career with the Yankees, Phillies, and a return engagement in New York.
