1934 Goudey #12 Carl Hubbell
Carl Hubbell, months away from striking out Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons and Cronin in a row at the 1934 All-Star Game.
Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.

About Carl Hubbell
Carl Hubbell pitched his entire sixteen-year career for the New York Giants, from his 1928 debut through 1943, after Detroit's organization pushed him away from the screwball that would define him — Ty Cobb wanted no part of the strain it put on a young arm. Giants scout Dick Kinsella found him in the Texas League, and manager John McGraw, remembering how Christy Mathewson had thrived on a similar 'fadeaway,' let him rebuild around it. He won National League MVP twice, in 1933 and 1936, led the Giants to three pennants and the 1933 World Series title, and during 1936-37 reeled off 24 consecutive victories, still the major-league record. Teammates and writers called him 'the Meal Ticket' for how reliably he delivered a win when New York needed one most. This card carries his artwork forward from the 1933 Goudey set onto card #12 of the new issue's first sheet — a fitting spot for a pitcher just months from striking out Ruth, Gehrig, Foxx, Simmons and Cronin in succession at the 1934 All-Star Game, still the most famous sequence in exhibition history. He finished 253-154 with a 2.98 ERA and entered the Hall of Fame in 1947.
