Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.
About Hugh Critz
Hugh “Hughie” Critz started out in 1921 with Class D Greenwood, climbing through Memphis and Minneapolis before Cincinnati called him up in 1924 — he singled twice off Grover Cleveland Alexander in his debut and hit .322 as a rookie. Undersized at 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds, Critz built his name with the glove, not the bat: he led National League second basemen in fielding categories nineteen times, set a major-league record for second basemen with 588 assists in 1926, and later strung together 197 consecutive errorless chances. Draper-Maynard marketed a “Hugh Critz” model glove and dubbed him the “Keystone King” in its ads. Acquired by the Giants in 1930, he anchored John McGraw’s infield — McGraw called him simply “the best in the game” — and helped New York beat Washington in the 1933 World Series. This 1934 Goudey card reuses his portrait from the previous year’s set, catching Critz in the same New York uniform he wore into a tight second-place pennant race that September.
