1934 Goudey #16 Joe Kuhel

Washington Senators · American League · Press sheet 1 of 4 · "Lou Gehrig says" (blue strip)

Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.

About Joe Kuhel

Joseph Anthony Kuhel — his surname pronounced “Cool” — turned pro in 1924 with the Flint Vehicles, climbing to Kansas City of the American Association, where he batted .361 in the Blues' 1929 Little World Series title run. A left-handed first baseman, he debuted with the Washington Senators on July 31, 1930, and took over as the regular in 1931. Kuhel helped anchor Washington's 1933 pennant winner, scoring the winning run in the clinching game before batting .150 in a five-game World Series loss to the Giants. Card #16 catches him in a Senators uniform for 1934 — one of the returning 1933 subjects reprised on Goudey's first sheet — the season he hit .289 with three homers in 63 games before a broken ankle ended his year. He bounced back with the finest season of his career in 1936, batting .321 with a career-high 118 RBIs and finishing sixth in AL MVP voting; he later managed Washington (1948–49). Across 18 seasons with the Senators and White Sox, he totaled 2,212 hits, 131 home runs, and 1,049 RBIs, with a .992 fielding average that made him the American League's premier defensive first baseman of the 1930s.
