About John Stone
John Thomas Stone was first called up by the Detroit Tigers in 1928 and spent six seasons in their outfield, developing into one of the American League's steadiest hitters. His finest year came in 1931, when he batted .327, led the league in singles, and placed 16th in MVP voting; the season before, he had strung together a 26-game hitting streak. On April 30, 1933, he authored one of the era's signature single-day performances, becoming the first major leaguer to collect six extra-base hits in a regulation doubleheader — four doubles and two home runs against the St. Louis Browns. That December, Detroit traded him to Washington in a straight-up swap for Goose Goslin, a deal that backfired almost immediately as Goslin helped power the Tigers to back-to-back pennants. This Goudey #40 captures him in that new Senators uniform, a fit he sustained with typical consistency — over .300 in seven of his eleven seasons — until tuberculosis ended his career after 1938. He finished with a .310 average and 1,391 hits, and died in 1955 at age 50.
