1934 Goudey #41 George Earnshaw

About George Earnshaw
George Livingston “Moose” Earnshaw, a strapping 6-foot-4 right-hander nicknamed for his rangy, powerful build, anchored Connie Mack's great Philadelphia Athletics teams to three straight American League pennants (1929-1931) and back-to-back World Series titles in 1929 and 1930. A Swarthmore College product who starred for the minor-league Baltimore Orioles, he was purchased by Mack in 1928 and quickly became an ace, leading the American League with 24 wins in 1929; for three seasons, he and Lefty Grove were the only two pitchers in the majors to both win 20-plus games for the same club. His signature stretch came in the 1930 World Series against St. Louis, where he reeled off 22 consecutive scoreless innings and beat the Cardinals on one day's rest to clinch the title in Game Six, prompting jubilant teammates to hail him as “Iron Man” over the air. Sold to the White Sox for the 1934 season pictured on card #41, his recognized rookie issue, Earnshaw led Chicago's staff before closing out his career with Brooklyn and St. Louis, finishing 127-93 with 1,002 strikeouts. He later served as a Navy gunnery officer aboard the carrier Yorktown in World War II, earning a Bronze Star.
