1934 Goudey #63 Minter Hayes

About Minter Hayes
Born Minter Carney Hayes — “Minter” his mother’s choice, “Jack” his father’s — on July 19, 1906, in Clanton, Alabama, he went by Jack, or Jackie. He left the University of Alabama after two years, signed with the Birmingham Barons in 1927, and joined the Washington Senators weeks after his 21st birthday. A December 1931 trade sent him to the Chicago White Sox, the club pictured on this 1934 Goudey #63, his recognized rookie card. At second base in Chicago, Hayes drew praise from manager Jimmy Dykes as “absolutely the best double play man of his time,” leading American League second basemen in assists, double plays and range factor in 1937, a year after a career-best .312 with 84 RBIs in 108 games. His career ended in 1940, when an eye ailment diagnosed as glaucoma cost him the sight in one eye; he played out the season half-blind behind a makeshift helmet, becoming the first major leaguer to wear one in a game, before losing his remaining vision entirely. Over 12,000 fans packed Comiskey Park for a 1949 tribute night, and Alabama inducted him into its Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
