1934 Goudey #64 Frank Grube

About Frank Grube
Frank Grube entered pro ball in 1928 with Portsmouth of the Virginia League, via Hartford, Bridgeport, and Buffalo — earning International League All-Star honors in 1930 by hitting .348 for the Bisons — before debuting with the Chicago White Sox in 1931. He was Chicago's primary catcher the next two seasons, posting a career-best .282 in 1932, the year he was also fined for a bench-clearing brawl with umpire George Moriarty. The White Sox traded him to the St. Louis Browns in November 1933, and he hit .288 in 65 games in his first season there, covering a 12-game stretch after catcher Rollie Hemsley's arrest by hitting .439 — the year pictured on his rookie card in the 1934 Goudey set. A two-sport pro, he also played end for the NFL's New York Yankees in 1928. Grube's seven big-league seasons closed in 1941; four years later he was shot in his New York apartment building and died the next day, at 40, in an unsolved case.
