1934 Goudey #65 Cliff Bolton
About Cliff Bolton
Born William Clifton Bolton in High Point, North Carolina, the left-handed-hitting catcher started out in 1927 with his hometown Piedmont League club, then climbed through the Eastern League and Southern Association, batting .380 for Chattanooga in 1930. He reached the Washington Senators in 1931 and turned in one of the era's great bench seasons in 1933, hitting .410 in a reserve role as Washington won the American League pennant; he took two at-bats in that fall's World Series. His only two years as an everyday regular came in 1935 and 1936, the first his best full season at .304. He closed his seven-year big-league career with Detroit in 1937 and a brief 1941 return to Washington, finishing at .291 with 280 hits in 335 games. He kept hitting in the minors and the North Carolina State League into the early 1950s. Card #65 in the 1934 Goudey set, issued the year after his pennant-winning World Series turn, is recognized as Bolton's rookie card.
