1934 Goudey #39 Dixie Walker

About Dixie Walker
Fred "Dixie" Walker entered pro ball in 1928 and had a brief look with the Yankees in 1931, but 1933 was his true rookie year — making this 1934 Goudey #39 card, issued in Yankees pinstripes, his recognized rookie card. Traded to the White Sox and Detroit later in the decade, the Georgia-born outfielder found stardom after joining Brooklyn in 1939, where fans loved his hard-nosed style enough to dub him "The People's Cherce," Ebbets Field's Brooklynese pronunciation of "the people's choice." He backed up the nickname by winning the 1944 National League batting title at .357, leading the league with 124 RBIs in 1945, and earning five straight All-Star selections from 1943 to 1947 while helping Brooklyn to World Series appearances in 1941 and 1947, both losses to his old Yankees club. Walker retired in 1949 with a .306 average and 2,064 hits over eighteen seasons. His legacy carries a real asterisk: in 1947 he petitioned against Jackie Robinson joining the Dodgers, later calling it "the stupidest thing" he'd ever done.
