About Jimmie DeShong
James Brooklyn DeShong broke through with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1932, then resurfaced with the New York Yankees in 1934 — the club pictured on his 1934 Goudey issue, card #96, his recognized rookie card and one of the tough final high numbers (#73–96) that closed out the set's last printing sheet late in the season. DeShong's signature afternoon came that July 28, when he fired a one-hitter against his former Athletics teammates, the only knock a seventh-inning home run off Hall of Famer Jimmie Foxx. He moved on to the Washington Senators in 1936 and turned in his best season, going 18–10 to finish eighth in the American League in victories. The right-hander pitched through 1939, finishing his major league career with a 47–44 record, a 5.08 ERA and 273 strikeouts across 175 games, then closed out his baseball life as a minor league manager and scout for the Athletics organization.
