About Red Rolfe
Robert Abial "Red" Rolfe grew up in Penacook, New Hampshire, picked up his nickname for his hair color at Phillips Exeter Academy, and starred at shortstop for Dartmouth College before the Yankees signed him in 1931. After a brief debut that June, he took over at third base in 1934 — the season pictured on his tough high-number Goudey rookie card, issued on the set's final sheet as New York's new everyday hot-corner man. Rolfe anchored the Yankees' championship dynasty for the rest of the decade, playing all 154 games in 1937 despite a painful thighbone tumor, and earning four straight All-Star nods from 1937 to 1940. His finest season came in 1939, when he led the American League with 213 hits, 139 runs and 46 doubles while batting .329. He collected five World Series rings (1936-1939 and 1941) and set a Series record for games played at third base. After retiring in 1942, Rolfe managed the Detroit Tigers to a runner-up finish and 1950 Manager of the Year honors, then spent thirteen years as Dartmouth's athletic director, where the school's ballfield bears his name today.
