About Fritz Ostermueller
Frederick Raymond 'Fritz' Ostermueller signed with his hometown Quincy Reds in 1926 at 18, then spent eight years in Branch Rickey's St. Louis Cardinals chain. He broke through with Rochester in 1933, going 16-7 and leading the International League with a 2.44 ERA, sparking a bidding war the Boston Red Sox won by sending three players and cash to Rochester for 1934. He debuted April 21, called into a bases-loaded jam, and worked seven relief outs for the win, then settled in for a 10-13, 3.49-ERA rookie year pictured on his tough, high-number Goudey card — a season in which he also surrendered two Babe Ruth home runs and struck the Babe out, then came away with an autographed ball. Ostermueller pitched until 1948 for Boston, St. Louis, Brooklyn, and Pittsburgh, finishing 114-115 and earning the nickname 'Old Folks' as Pittsburgh's 41-year-old staff ace in his final seasons; he's also credited with the original line that home-run hitters drive Cadillacs, singles hitters drive Fords.
