1934 Goudey #19 Lefty Grove

Boston Red Sox · American League · Press sheet 1 of 4 · "Lou Gehrig says" (blue strip)
★ Hall of FameKey card

Lefty Grove’s first card as a Red Sox — Tom Yawkey sent $125,000 to Connie Mack for him in December 1933. A key card of the set’s first sheet.

Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.

About Lefty Grove

Robert Moses Grove turned pro in 1920 and spent five dominant seasons with Jack Dunn's Baltimore Orioles, leading the International League in strikeouts every year, before Connie Mack paid a reported $100,600 to bring the hard-throwing left-hander to the Philadelphia Athletics in 1925 — a price that topped what the Yankees had given for Babe Ruth. Nicknamed "Lefty" for his left arm, Grove anchored Philadelphia's 1929-31 pennant winners and 1929-30 World Series champions, going 4-2 with a 1.75 ERA across three Series. He led the American League in ERA nine times and strikeouts seven straight seasons, punctuating it with back-to-back pitching Triple Crowns in 1930 and 1931 — the latter a 31-4, 2.06 ERA season and AL MVP award built on a 16-game winning streak that tied the league record; when a rookie's error cost him win No. 17, Grove tore the clubhouse apart. This card marks Grove's first issue as a Red Sox, following new Boston owner Tom Yawkey's December 1933 trade sending Connie Mack $125,000 for him — reissued on Goudey's first sheet of 1933 stars. He won game No. 300 in a Boston uniform in 1941 and entered the Hall of Fame in 1947.
