About Moose Solters
Julius Joseph Solters entered pro ball as a slugging outfielder, batting .363 with 36 home runs in the International League in 1933 and earning league All-Star honors. He got his call in 1934 with the Boston Red Sox and capped his rookie year by hitting for the cycle on August 19, 1934. He hit for power and average with the St. Louis Browns (.330 in 1935), Cleveland Indians (.323 in 1937), and Chicago White Sox, driving in a career-high 134 runs in 1936 and finishing with 83 home runs and 599 RBIs from 1934 to 1943. He carried the nickname 'Moose,' given by Albany manager Bill McCorry in the minors after an earlier boyhood nickname, 'Lemons,' for fetching lemons for veteran players on hot days. An errant throw fractured his skull during pregame warm-ups in August 1941, gradually leaving him blind and ending his career. Card #30 in the 1934 Goudey set is his rookie card, picturing him in a Red Sox uniform during that breakout season.
