About Hi Bell
Herman "Hi" Bell was working as a cowpoke on a Colorado ranch before the Kentucky-born right-hander won a promotion to the Cardinals in 1924 — teammates hung the name "Hi" on him from the greeting "Hiya, how're you doing?" He made an unforgettable debut: on July 19, 1924, Bell started and won both ends of a doubleheader against the Boston Braves, a feat no pitcher has repeated since. Working mostly in relief across parts of eight seasons with the Cardinals (1924, 1926-27, 1929-30) and Giants (1932-34), he topped the Cardinals staff with 8 saves during their 1930 pennant run, one of three National League pennants he helped deliver en route to two World Series titles, in 1926 and 1933. His most famous moment came in Game 4 of the 1926 Series, surrendering the third of Babe Ruth's record three home runs that day — a towering shot to deep center that teammate Grover Cleveland Alexander called among the longest he had ever seen. Card #52 in the 1934 Goudey set, his recognized rookie card, arrived a decade into his career and captures him in Giants flannels during his final major-league season.
