About Homer Peel
Homer Hefner Peel entered pro ball in 1923 and reached the majors as an outfielder with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1927, moved to the Philadelphia Phillies in 1929, then returned to St. Louis that December in a trade that sent future Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander to Philadelphia. Peel closed his five-season big-league career with the New York Giants in 1933–34 — the club shown on this card — and earned a World Series ring when the Giants beat Washington in 1933, going 1-for-2 in two Series appearances. His fame came in the minors, where fourteen Texas League seasons and a .325 career average, the league’s all-time record, earned him the nickname “Ty Cobb of the Texas League.” He won the 1937 batting title at .370 and in 1938 became the only man in Texas League history picked as both player and manager. Card #88 is Peel’s recognized rookie card, part of the scarce high-number series where twelve National League stars carry a “Chuck Klein says” banner.
