About George Darrow
George Oliver Darrow was a left-handed pitcher out of Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas, whose long professional apprenticeship carried him through a string of minor league stops — the Oklahoma City Indians, Pueblo Braves, San Antonio Indians, Galveston Buccaneers, Baltimore Orioles, Oakland Oaks, Birmingham Barons, Portland Beavers, and Hollywood Stars among them — before the Philadelphia Phillies finally called him up in 1934, at age 30. Wearing uniform No. 41, he appeared in 17 games (eight starts) that season, going 2-6 with a 5.51 ERA and 14 strikeouts over 49 innings — the only major league work of his career. That single 1934 trial is why card No. 87 in the Goudey set, picturing him in a Phillies cap and grouped among the "Chuck Klein Says" National League subjects in the set's scarce high-number series, ranks as both his rookie card and his lone big-league issue. Darrow died in 1983 in Sun City, Arizona, at age 79.
