About Don Hurst

Frank O'Donnell Hurst turned pro in 1924 with the Class D Paris Bourbons, and after manager Burt Shotton converted him from the outfield to first base at Syracuse in 1926, he came up with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1928. Known simply as "Don," a shortened form of his middle name, the left-handed slugger hit over .300 and slugged over .500 in each of his first six seasons, blasting a career-high 31 home runs in 1929 and leading the National League with 143 RBIs in 1932, when he batted .339 with 24 homers. He was chosen for a 1930 all-star series in Havana alongside future Hall of Famers. Hurst was still a Phillie when Goudey pictured him on card #33 of its 1934 set, now recognized as his rookie card, but a two-year slump sent him to the Cubs that June in a trade for Dolph Camilli, and he was out of the majors before turning 30.
