1934 Goudey #11 Paul Waner

Pittsburgh Pirates · National League · Press sheet 1 of 4 · "Lou Gehrig says" (blue strip)
★ Hall of FameStar

Paul "Big Poison" Waner, the Pirates’ batting-title machine and 3,000-hit man.

Sheet 1 (#1-24) is an all-returning cast: Goudey recycled 1933 subjects and artwork here to get cards onto store shelves by Opening Day, saving the new faces for the later sheets. The famous "1933" #106 Nap Lajoie make-up card was printed alongside this set's final sheet.

About Paul Waner

Paul Waner patrolled right field across twenty seasons, the first fifteen (1926–1940) as the offensive engine of the Pittsburgh Pirates before closing his career with the Dodgers, Braves, and Yankees. A precise line-drive hitter, he won three National League batting titles — .380 in 1927, .362 in 1934, and .373 in 1936 — and the 1927 crown came with the National League Most Valuable Player award as Pittsburgh reached the World Series, where Waner hit .333 in a losing effort against New York. Paired in the Pirates outfield with brother Lloyd, the two combined for 5,611 hits, a record for brothers, and each earned Cooperstown honors — Paul in 1952, Lloyd in 1967 — making them only the second brother pair so enshrined. His nickname, "Big Poison," dates to a 1927 Polo Grounds fan whose accented shout of "person" for each Waner brother came out sounding like "poison," and it stuck. He retired with 3,152 hits, reaching 3,000 in 1942 with a single off Rip Sewell, and a .333 lifetime average. This 1934 Goudey #11 catches Waner in his second batting-title season, on artwork the set carried over from its 1933 predecessor across the first 24-card sheet.
