About Bill Swift
William Vincent Swift made his big-league debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 12, 1932, following stops in the minors with clubs that included the Kansas City Blues and St. Paul Saints. The right-hander spent eight seasons in Pittsburgh, then closed out an 11-year career with the Boston Bees, Brooklyn Dodgers, and Chicago White Sox, finishing 95-82 with a 3.58 ERA and 636 strikeouts over 336 games. He led the National League in walks per nine innings in 1932 and in hit batsmen in 1934 — the same year Goudey pictured him in a Pirates uniform on card #57 of its classic set, recognized as his rookie card. An above-average hitter for a pitcher, Swift batted .227 with 3 home runs and 54 RBI, and in 1941 he helped the Brooklyn Dodgers capture the National League pennant. Oddly, his career numbers turned out to be strikingly similar to those of a second big-league pitcher also named Bill Swift, active decades later.
