About Earl Grace
Robert Earl Grace was a catcher from Barlow, Kentucky, who was called up to the Chicago Cubs in 1929. He found his footing after joining the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1931, and turned in a defensive season for the ages in 1932: 282 consecutive fielding chances without an error and a .998 fielding percentage, a National League record for catchers that stood until 1950. Still Pittsburgh's catcher in 1934, Grace closed out his career with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1936-37, finishing at .263 with 627 games played. Card #58 in the 1934 Goudey set, picturing him with the Pirates, is recognized as Grace's rookie card despite a big-league career that began five years earlier. He later settled in Phoenix, Arizona, running cotton and citrus farming operations, and served as an Army lieutenant during World War II, coaching baseball for servicemen at a Florida convalescent hospital.
