About Mark Koenig

Mark Koenig made his first big-league roster with the New York Yankees in 1925, and by 1927 was the starting shortstop for the legendary “Murderers’ Row” club, batting .285 in the regular season and .500 in a four-game World Series sweep of Pittsburgh — his triple off Tom Zachary on September 30 helped set up Babe Ruth’s record 60th home run. The Yankees repeated as champions in 1928. After stops in Detroit and two years at short for the Chicago Cubs, Koenig was one of three players — along with Harvey Hendrick and Ted Kleinhans, plus $65,000 — the Cubs sent to Philadelphia in November 1933 for Triple Crown winner Chuck Klein. He never played for the Phillies; a month later they flipped him to Cincinnati, which is why this card shows him in a Reds uniform. Koenig played a career-high 151 games for the 1934 Reds before closing out a twelve-year career with the Giants in 1936, finishing a .279 hitter with 1,190 hits — and the last surviving member of the 1927 Yankees when he died in 1993.
