About Wesley Schulmerich
Edward Wesley Schulmerich starred at Oregon Agricultural College, where teammates tagged him "Ironhorse" for the bruising running style he brought to the football field as a fullback and linebacker. He carried that power into the Pacific Coast League, batting .380 with 28 home runs for the 1930 Los Angeles Angels, then debuted with the Boston Braves in 1931, platooning in the outfield through 1933. His finest season came that year, when a .318 average, fifth-best in the National League, was split between Boston and the Philadelphia Phillies, where he became an everyday fixture under manager Burt Shotton. His major-league career, spanning 1931 to 1934, closed out with the Cincinnati Reds, the club pictured on this Goudey #54 issue, now recognized as his rookie card. He finished with a .289 average, 27 home runs, and 192 RBIs across 429 games, then returned home to Oregon, where he remained a fixture at Oregon State athletic events for the next four decades.
